The confrontation inside the Temple Church brought the night's hidden alliances into the open. What had seemed a desperate flight from the police and a mysterious killer suddenly acquired a clear, treacherous shape: the servant Rémy Legaludec, whom Langdon and Sophie had trusted as Teabing's loyal manservant, was in fact the operative who had freed Silas and was now directing the monk's movements. The keystone, which Sophie had retrieved from the Depository Bank of Zurich and which Langdon had carried through the church, became the prize in a standoff that would strip away every remaining illusion about who was hunting the Grail.

The Standoff and the Threat to the Keystone

Silas, having been freed from his bonds by Rémy, entered the church silently and took Sophie by surprise, pressing a gun into her spine and wrapping a powerful arm across her chest. Langdon, seeing the monk's red eyes and the weapon, immediately raised the black cryptex over his head and declared that he would smash it on the floor rather than let it fall into the wrong hands. From the shadows near the annex, Rémy Legaludec had been watching the stalemate. Fearing that Langdon would actually destroy the keystone and that all his years of service—and the fortune the Teacher had promised him—would be lost, Rémy made the decision to show his face. He stepped into the circular chamber, aimed a small Medusa revolver at Teabing's back, and announced that he had been waiting a long time to do this. He then ordered Silas to take the keystone from Langdon. Langdon, with the gun pressed into Teabing's back and the threat of immediate execution, reluctantly handed the cryptex to Silas.

The Kidnapping and the Escape

With the keystone secured in his robe, Silas kept Langdon and Sophie at gunpoint while Rémy dragged Teabing backward out of the church, the historian's crutches clattering on the stone floor. Sophie demanded to know who Rémy was working for, and he answered with a smirk: "You would be surprised, Mademoiselle Neveu." The two captors then fled the church, taking Teabing as a hostage in the Jaguar limousine.
